#SaveMalnadGidda

The Quest for Soul-Nourishing foods has always been at the heart of founders at Indic Organics. However, the catalyst to the story of the brand – Indic Organics began when our founder wanted to source authentic A2 milk and ghee for their newborn child in Dakshina Kannada District. They started researching about all the ancient Vedic breed cows. That is when from traditional ayurvedic sources, it was suggested to go for Malnad Gidda Milk and Ghee. The reason being, milk of Malnad gidda was reported to contain the highest amount of Lactoferrin among all the native breeds of India. But then it seemed almost impossible to source this A2 milk from really genuine sources who engaged in traditional cow rearing. It was a shocker that in its original habitat, the milk of Malnad Gidda had become so scarce.

To their surprise, they were astonished at the current dilapidated condition of this breed. Rampant Artificial Insemination over the course of the last 50 years had led to significant dilution and corruption of the A2 gene pool in Malnad Gidda breed. Most farmers in this region had stopped rearing Male bull cows of Malnad Gidda as tractors have replaced bulls in farming long back. The result was most farmers relied on the Animal Husbandry department for Artificial Insemination. Even now, the Animal Husbandry department doesn’t stock the semen of Pure breed Malnad Gidda bulls. Result being most female cows of Malnad Gidda breed in this region were being impregnated with the semen of A1 Breed bulls like Jersey and HF. Hence, the A2 gene purity has deteriorated over the course of 50 years. This is the reason why, ‘Kapila’ or ‘Kapile’ which is a mutant variety of this breed has become such a rarity. Kapila cow, a copper hued brownish beauty among cows with blue eyes, is the holiest of the holy cows of India.

Hence, the founders decided to start a movement to conserve the gene purity of Malnad Gidda breed. Fortunately, there were a bunch of Traditional farmers in interior hinterlands of Puttur, Sullia, Kasaragod, Sirsi, Theerthahalli who still did natural breeding of Malnad Gidda male bulls and cows. But then how to create an economically viable solution to rear these cows and further develop their progeny as milk has short shelf life and needs cold supply chain. Thus, was born the story of Indic Organics Ghritam Malnad Gidda A2 Ghee.
